Pokémon has gone crazy, as have all collectible cards like MTG and sports! This is like 2020 all over again: stock is very limited and prices are through the roof!

We get our collectible cards from game distributors and they are products that are "subject to allocation." What this means is the distributors can't get enough product for every store that's interested so they allocate--or divvy it up--among all their own customers. If we get any collectible cards at all, it's a fraction of our order.

One of our distributors told us not to expect any Pokémon allocation for 6-12 months because they just can't get enough product. We're only getting about 20% of what we ordered for upcoming Magic releases. The suppliers who still have collectible cards to sell have raised their prices by 2-3 times what they charged us a year ago. It's the law of supply & demand in action.

The problem is not tariffs; most cards are printed in the US. It's because speculators are trading collectible cards like gold. The last time we got a normal Pokémon allocation and put it out at regular MSRP, we were sold out in 10 minutes.

The bubble will burst as it always does. Card companies will catch up with demand and make more product available. Prices will go back down--that law of supply & demand again. In the meantime, our Pokémon, Magic and sports card stocks will be extremely limited and it will be at market price, not MSRP, because is the only way we can have any product in the store.

If you don't like the current prices--and we don't either!--you may want to wait to buy until the current frenzy of speculation settles down.
